Academic Difficulties in Children

Academic concerns, which might include issues such as learning difficulties or disabilities, underachievement, lack of attention from teachers, and bullying, affect a number of students throughout their academic careers, from elementary school to college. Academic concerns may influence a student’s performance in the classroom negatively, but they are also likely to have a significant effect on other areas of life, often placing undue stress on a child and interfering with home, work, and play dimensions.

A student who experiences some type of academic concern will benefit from speaking to a professional.

In the Classroom

Understanding Learning Difficulties in children

Concerns of an academic nature can relate to a child’s performance in the classroom, but they might also include a child’s behaviour toward teachers or fellow students. Some typical academic concerns include:

Learning disabilities

Lack of proper attention from school officials

Bullying at school

Disinterest in topic(s) of study

Confusion about or misunderstanding of topic(s) of study

Underachievement in studies

Procrastination and time management issues.

Parents and classroom instructors who maintain an awareness of any difficulties the children in their care might be having may be able to recognize an academic concern early in its development. This mindfulness may benefit a child significantly, as academic concerns, especially those that go unrecognized, may have a lasting impact on a child’s educational outlook.

For example, a child who struggles with reading and/or writing in primary school will be more likely to consistently underachieve in the classroom throughout high school, at which point he or she may find it difficult to prepare for college-level work. Areas of concern in the classroom will also have an effect on a child’s mental health in the long term.  Child’s self-esteem and confidence gets a major hit, which becomes irreparable till or beyond adulthood.

Support for students with academic concerns

Students who are struggling with school might obtain help in a number of ways. Concerns that are academic in nature can often be resolved with greater support from the academic system. A child who struggles with a particular subject might benefit from specialized study or a tutor, while a child who has a learning disability may be able to complete assignments with accuracy but need more time to do so than his or her peers. Classroom accommodations for students with disabilities are often effective at meeting the different needs of students, and special education classrooms might be an option for some students whose current classroom placement may not allow them to thrive. School tutoring programs might also benefit some children, and teachers can make sure that all students are aware of the counseling services, accommodations for disabilities, and tutoring services that are available to them.

Children who experience stress as a result of academic pressure may benefit from counselling.

Red Signals -

Be alert and look for these signs in a child, can occur as a single sign or in a cluster.  If you are identifying red signal, talk to a specialist whether it be for ruling out the concern or for seeking right intervention.

Becoming aware of the warning signs of learning disabilities and getting children the necessary help early on can be a key to child's future.

Learning disabilities affect one in seven people according to the National Institutes of Health. Parents, therefore, need to be familiar with the early indicators of a learning disability in order to get the right help as soon as possible.

The earlier a learning disability is detected, the better chance a child will have of succeeding in school and in life. Parents are encouraged to understand the warning signs of a learning disability from as early as pre-school. The first years in school are especially crucial for a young child.

Many children and adults with learning disabilities remain undiagnosed and go through life with this "hidden handicap." The resulting problems can lead to poor self esteem, failure to thrive in school, and difficulty in the workplace. With early detection and intervention, parents can give their children the necessary skills for coping with and compensating for the learning disability.

All children learn in highly individual ways. Children with learning disabilities simply process information differently, but they are generally of normal or above-average intelligence. Having a learning disability can affect a child's ability to read, write, speak, do math, and build social relationships.

Early Warning Signs

      Preschool

  • Late talking, compared to other children

  • Pronunciation problems

  • Slow vocabulary growth, often unable to find the right word

  • Difficulty rhyming words

  • Trouble learning numbers, the alphabet, days of the week

  • Extremely restless and easily distracted

Types of Learning Difficulties

Kids Drawing

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Also called reading disability, dyslexia affects areas of the brain that process language.

In the Classroom

Dysgraphia

Dysgraphia is a learning disability that affects writing abilities. It can manifest itself as difficulties with spelling, poor handwriting and trouble putting thoughts on paper. Because writing requires a complex set of motor and information processing skills, saying a student has dysgraphia is not sufficient. A student with disorders in written expression will benefit from specific accommodations in the learning environment, as well as additional practice learning the skills required to be an accomplished writer.

Elementary Classroom

Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia is a math learning disability that impairs an individual's ability to learn number-related concepts, perform accurate math calculations, reason and problem solve, and perform other basic math skills.

Dyscalculia is sometimes called “number dyslexia” or “math dyslexia.”

ADHD - SLD

ADHD makes the individuals less available for learning because of the activity level, inattention, and/or impulsivity. LD makes the individual unable to learn in the normal way, requiring intervention strategies to learn how to learn. Medication will not help minimize the impact of LD. Special education services will not help minimize the impact of ADHD. Each requires proper recognition and specific treatments.

Executive Functioning

We use executive function when we perform such activities as planning, organizing, strategizing and paying attention to and remembering details.

People with executive function problems have difficulty with planning, organizing and managing time and space. They also show weakness with "working memory" (or "seeing in your mind's eye"), which is an important tool in guiding one's actions.

As with other manifestations of LD, disorders in executive function can run in families. Problems can be seen at any age but tend to be increasingly apparent as children move through the early elementary grades; the demands of completing schoolwork independently can often trigger signs that there are difficulties in this area.

Rina Sriram, Bengaluru

“I started the remedial sessions for my son from March this year online after the lockdown started. I would say this is best decision I have taken for my son.

He was a child who does not talk much in class and always tries to avoid eye contacts with teachers. Within one week of starting the session, educator built such an amazing bond with my son that he started looking forward the classes.

There are times when he is continuously talking to the educator which in fact looks like he is teaching her.

As a mother I am so happy to see my child so confident and most importantly happily attending classes.  Educator is amazingly dedicated towards children. I have seen so much improvement in my sons reading skill in just 3 months. He shows interest in reading books now. That’s important - kids doing things with interest on their own than we having to force them. A teacher is someone who is responsible for building the character and confidence of the kid and I am glad to have met her."

"My child now has the best teacher!”

“Meha here, my son Rakshit has been struggling with academics and I was looking for special educators.

One of my friend referred to Achievance. I called madam, as the centre was on other end of the city she guided me very well.

Every bad thing has good side too.  Thanks to the lockdown, madam started taking online classes. We can see changes in our child, his confidence level is up now and is becoming independent, all thanks to madam."

Dear Sini Ma’am,

My Son, Yash Hemanth Kumar is undergoing Remedial classes for his Learning Difficulties with Achievance Alternative Learning from August of 2020 and have no words to express the progress he has made. We can clearly say, he has improved leaps and bound from the time we have started the classes with you.

Still a long way to go, but at this moment we are so grateful with the progress he has made.

I wanted to acknowledge and appreciate the amazing efforts from all the Teachers especially Hema Ma’am and you in these unprecedented times to ensure that learning never stops for Yash.  We are amused to see the teaching and managing skills of Hema Ma’am and her abilities which have made a huge positive impact on our child and us, which has fairly translated into an increase in skills and learning in Yash. Yash will be ever grateful, for the nurturing and persistent nature of Hema Ma’am for his life.

We always carry the highest regards and respect for our Teachers and Mentors who have shaped us the way we are today, and this belief has become stronger with what we see with the unsung Heroes in our lives now.

Thank you Sini ma'am for providing fantastic special educator like Kavitha ma'am.

Rina Sriram, Bengaluru - Feb 2022

Barkha ma'am's teaching style is good and her way of mingling with my son is excellent. She encourages him to speak loudly and confidently. She keeps telling him - Don't tell you cant or I don't know, you can do it which is really motivating to hear.

She patiently deals with his mistakes even when he makes it again and again. I see a good improvement in his way of writing and reading.

Seena, Bengaluru - Feb 2022

Definitely Barkha mam and Kavita mam are superb teachers with extraordinary skills to  manage the children.

Thank you Sini mam for designing your curriculum and providing your support.

After being associated with Achievance  I can see good changes in  my child.

Thanks a lot

Simran, Ranchi - Feb 2022

Teaching wise can't judge well.
My child learned math quickly from Kavitha and English from Barkha
The difference I see is Barkha had more personal connect with him. He used to be excited for her class to tell what happened in school or to show anything new he has. Kavitha is a bit more strict that way so he has a fear factor.
So both are equally good and have their own style of dealing with kids.
